Pancakes are a right of passage and this couldn’t ring truer on Shrove Tuesday. There’s an impressive stack of restaurants mixing and flipping for the day in question and we got in touch with DesignMyNight for the intel on where to celebrate come 21st February.
From monstrous stacks to viral plates covered in Nutella, you’ll struggle to find a batter list of bites.
Riding House Cafe
It doesn’t matter what stack you order at Riding House Cafe, we can tell you right now that you’re going to love whatever lands on your table. Their malted deep dish pancakes come with three different delicious edible outfits. If you have a sweet tooth, go for the ones that come with toasted marshmallows, coconut clotted cream, white chocolate and banana-infused maple syrup. If you’re more of the savoury spectrum though, their smoked streaky Dingley Dell bacon with blueberry compote and sour cream will blow your socks off.
Breakfast Club Canary Wharf
There’s plenty of words to describe The Breakfast Club, one of them being iconic. This retro cafe in Canary Wharf describes themselves as the world’s first ever ‘breakfast pub’. Cool world-firsts aside, they do a mean breakfast and brunch and they naturally have a section dedicated to pancakes. What’s even more impressive about this joint is that every year they plate up limited edition towers to please the masses. They haven’t released the info just yet but they’re sure to have your mouth salivating on the 21st February.
Sunday in Brooklyn
If you haven’t seen Sunday in Brooklyn on your feed, you’re clearly not as addicted to social media as we are. This cult restaurant that hails from New York has taken London by storm with its viral pancakes. Their fluffy masterpieces can be ordered as a single, double or a triple stack which means you can take control of how indulgent you want your Shrove Tuesday feast to be. The syrup hazelnut maple praline syrup is a game changer, especially when you mix it in with their brown butter garnish.
Where The Pancakes Are
The name of this place says it all, really. Where The Pancakes Are specialise in your favourite brunch dish and you can find them in Battersea Power Station, Fitzrovia and London Bridge. The queues are sure to be out the door for these guys so make sure you arrive as early as you can (we promise it will be worth it). They have eight savoury options to pick from and six sweet options, alongside Dutch babies if you want to swap your traditional stack for an oven baked masterpiece.
The Polo Bar
Sometimes you need to embrace London’s ridiculous side. It’s a city where almost anything is possible, including pancake stacks that are heavier than the weight of a new born baby. The Polo Bar is known for having its doors open 24 hours a day and some of the tallest pancake towers in the city so you can bet it’s a great contender for your Shrove Tuesday plans. Their menu has six options to choose from but the Oreo number always gives us the feels.
Apple Butter Cafe
The pancakes at Apple Butter Cafe are, admittedly, almost too pretty to eat. They also change weekly giving you a heap of reasons to visit after your obligatory trip on Shrove Tuesday. What they do promise when you arrive is unique flavours smacked together with three unbelievably fluffy pancakes. Previous creations that have taken our fancy include lemon and poppy seed, Oreo and Nutella and an indulgent chocolate brownie triumph.
Balans
If you’re planning a wild pancake party on 21st February, there’s only one place for it: Balans Soho No 60. This raucous joint is known as a Soho institution, staying open until an eye-watering 6am. For any night owls reading this, their famous pancakes feature on their late night menu so you can tuck into vegan matcha masterpieces and their traditional stacks that come with bacon, banana or berry toppings without having to watch the clock.
Timmy Green
If you’ve never been to Australia, you won’t know that these lot down under know a thing or two about brunch. Instead of taking a long haul trip to see why, pop down to Timmy Green on Pancake Day. This Aussie-inspired restaurant does not mess around when it comes to innovative flavours and bold bites. Their golden gaytime pancakes are a beast but are more than worth the aftermath of wobbling home. They comes glued together with milk chocolate ganache, malt crumble, whipped
mascarpone, salted caramel sauce and chocolate caramel tuile.
The Wolseley
Forget about Valentine’s; Pancake Day is most definitely our favourite date in February. For those of you looking for a swish spot to have a romantic date with some traditional pancakes, you need to know about The Wolseley. This all-day-café-restaurant is known to be a great hangout for celeb spotting and they have interiors that will trick you into thinking you have celeb-status too. Their locally famous stacks come with bacon, maple syrup or seasonal berries.
