Comedy shows lift up our moods and bring the lighter side of life into focus. And with everything going on in the world, we could all do with more light and laughter in our lives.
Whether you’re having a bad day or just want to keep the good vibes flowing, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite comedy shows, so that you can go forth and find your next favourite laugh out loud series.
Schitt’s Creek
Schitt’s Creek hit screens in 2015 and has had a huge following ever since. It then gained an even bigger following during lockdown when more people discovered the much loved and 9 time Emmy award-winning show. The show, created by father/son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, (also two of the stars of the show) follows the filthy rich Rose family who are suddenly thrown from their exuberant lifestyle into the very real world when they lose everything. Well, nearly everything… They are left with their one remaining asset, a small country town called Schitt’s Creek, which Jonny Rose bought his son David as a joke. They are then forced to relocate to this unusual little town and live in a motel surrounded by ‘quirky’ people that are worlds away from their old social circles. The show is full of dry and witty humour as well as stand out moments. Yet beyond the comic chaos of the super rich-to-rags tale, we find one of the sweetest, most heart-warming shows that has graced our screens in years. The Rose family, also including Moira and Alexis, discover friendship, community and love along their new journey. Do they deviate from the their old ways though? You’ll have to watch to find out.
Friends
THE sitcom show of the last 27 years- Friends is the comfort blanket of comedy shows for both the generation who watched it in the 90s and 00s (back when you had to wait a week for the next episode), the millennials that grew up with it over it’s 10 year reign and Gen-Z who discovered it during a decade + of re-runs and Netflix. It is furthermore, one of the most quoted shows in history. Set in New York, six friends navigate life and love throughout their 20s and 30s. While many fans would love another series of the show, a lot would rather it never made the big anticipated return and believe that it should remain as a time capsule and love letter to the 90s/early 00s. The beauty of Friends is that it shows the ups and downs of life in young adulthood. Maybe it remains a much-loved series because it is always familiar, no matter what is going on in life. It could be a terrible day but for fans of the show Joey, Ross, Chandler, Rachel, Phoebe and Monica are there for us. If you haven’t watched it yet, don’t worry it’s never too late to give it a go.
The Office US
Much like the subject of the fictional documentary in the show, who would’ve thought watching the employees of a paper company go through the 9-5 grind would make such good TV? But it sure does! The Office was originally a British sitcom written by and starring Ricky Gervais that only ever had two seasons. Then in 2005, The sitcom crossed the Atlantic and found great success, running for over 8 years and garnering a huge fan base all over the world. The likes of Steve Carell as the bumbling Boss of Dunder Mifflin, Michael Scott, John Krasinski, Mindy Kaling and Rainn Wilson made the show iconic with even more iconic jokes, some running throughout the shows reign. The Office has even become big time meme material! What makes this show all the more special is the fact that it is based in an otherwise mundane environment. The team at Dunder Mifflin experience the dread of Monday mornings and the anticipation of Friday afternoons, but amidst that, are the big and small moments that make the working day fun. With friendship and companionship at the heart, The Office USA is a show that many people can have a laugh at their own experience and at the expense of those ‘particular’ co-workers.
Modern Family
Just like The Office, Modern Family also took on the mockumentary and did so with droll humour and a phenomenal ensemble cast throughout it’s incredible 11 year run. The show follows the lives of three branches of one very different but very relatable family. There’s Jay the family patriarch, his much younger second wife and her son. You’ve then got the Dunphy clan that comprises of Phil, Clare and their three children. And also Mitchell and Cam, a gay couple and their adopted daughter, Lilly. The humour is often clever and sharp, but it really comes down to each character’s unique personality that helps to shape the series into something a lot more successful. There are no main characters, instead this entire show is a portrait of a family with all of the same dysfunctional problems and disasters that many other families can relate to. And yet, at the end of the day, the whole premise of the show is about love and acceptance.
Derry Girls
Derry Girls, is not a long running series like the other shows on this list and can be watched in a couple of days, if you’re into binge-watching tv shows. However in its 3 seasons, Derry Girls has caught the attention of many people of all ages. Based somewhat on the life of the series writer Lisa McGee, Derry Girls is set in early 90s Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It follows the lives of 5 spirited teenagers, Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James. The friends navigate their teen years whilst living through The Troubles and attend, up until the first episode, an all girl’s Catholic school. Despite the heavy background theme the show is comedy dynamite, with fantastic characters like Granda, Aunt Sarah and Sister Michael, who are so well-rounded they could have their own spin off shows. The lines are funny and memorable and each episode perfectly encaptures the often embarrassing moments of growing up. There are plenty of heart-warming and equally heart-breaking moments pinpointed to momentous moments in history, particularly in the third and final season which aired earlier this year. Lisa McGee has essentially written a wonderful show about adolescence amidst a backdrop of fear and terror, while still going through all the funny and disastrous life milestones with loved ones. The kind that become fond stories later on in life.
