Oh. My. Goodness. Is there anything I love more than Bonfire Night? I don’t think so…
From being a little girl going to the bonfire night celebrations in the rugby ground near where I grew up, to having my first kiss under a firework display, to now as a fully-fledged adult (honestly), still feeling that same sense of awe when I look up at the dazzling lights dancing against the night sky…
It’s just everything to me. I love going out in the cold night air, wrapped up against the chill and ready to be brandishing a sparkler in one hand and a toffee apple in the other!
I used to go to university in Nottingham, and every year my husband (then boyfriend) and I would go to the free Bonfire Night celebration on the Forest Recreation ground. It was this massive celebration, totally for free, and it was magical. There were fairground rides, food stalls, and a roaring bonfire before the firework display at 9pm.
However, one year I made a mistake and I was NOT adequately prepared. I was severely under-dressed for the event and ended up shivering, with soggy feet. I thought I’d put together a couple of ideas for this year’s event, as I’m going to need to be ready!
I’m always about keeping it easy and casual, so I tend to reach for dresses as a nice all-in-one option for an evening out! This dress is just too cute, and it’s got long sleeves that’ll help you stay warm on a November evening. The colour just screams autumn date night to me, and it’s going to be perfect for going to see the fireworks.
River Island – ORANGE SATIN PAISLEY WRAP MINI DRESS
£39.99
I’d pair it with a pair of chunky leather boots like these, and then add some bling accessories to make sure you stand out against the crowd!
Faux leather is having a come back this season, so these faux leather long gloves are sure to do the trick and keep your fingers warm!
This coat, also from River Island, would be great to put over the dress to make sure that you’re not getting too chilly.
If your style is a bit more laid back, I feel you on that. New Look has some amazing options that are a bit less in-your-face, and are kind to the planet, using responsibly sourced materials.
A ribbed knit midi dress is a great option as a base layer, as it’s something that you can wear again and again – everyone needs a little black dress after all! And from my body positive perspective, I know a body con dress looks a bit scary but I promise – you’ll rock it.
And for the final touches, it just has to be a massive scarf (beanies and gloves are necessary too).
With this one from New Look, I’m not even sure you’d need a jacket! It’s exactly my cup of tea – basically big enough to use as a blanket, so it’s perfect to keep you wrapped up and snuggly. I don’t own it (yet), but I love that it’s got so many colours in to pick up on in your other accessories! I’m not a brave fashion person, so I’d probably have this as my ‘key’ piece and just keep everything else very neutral.
One year, I went out and bought a teddy coat. I love it, but it’s a bit much for a daily coat so I’ve been on the hunt for something a little less out there. While looking around, this white cord teddy jacket might just have fallen into my basket… It’d be great over jeans, that black dress, the satin mini dress from earlier… Come on, what’s not to love about it? And it’d be GREAT for keeping you warm while you’re out watching the shows!
What about you? What’s your go-to look for a night out at the fireworks?
