There’s nothing better than a bit of summer sun, but have you noticed it brings out spots in places you usually don’t have an issue with? We’re talking bottom, boobs and back! Here, a skincare expert reveal why it happens, and how to combat it.
BUTTNE: Julia Marinkovich, UK representative for bestselling Korean brand, COSRX, says: “Most bottom spots, also known as folliculitis, are caused by a build-up of bacteria due to sweat and moisture which gets stuck in the hair follicles. It’s not a true form of acne that we would see on the face for example, rather a mild infection of the hair follicle that leads to red bumps and pus-filled pimples. This is of course more common in the warmer months, when we produce more sweat throughout the day. Hormones can also play a part, for example during a menstrual cycle, the hair follicles can become more sticky and prone to clogging.”
BOOBNE: Julia says: ”During the summer, our body produces more oil and we of course sweat more, so when you combine oil and sweat, well, it can result in acne. Unfortunately for those with breasts, this is one of the areas of the body that sweats most when it’s hotter. This, combined with the extra use of sunscreen can cause breakouts around the breast and chest area.”
BACKNE: Julia says: ”Again, backne happens when sweat, oil, dead skin cells and bacteria get trapped in your skin’s pores. This can be a very common area for breakouts in the summer, as backpacks, sweaty shirts or sports equipment can create friction on your back and worsen the issue.”
Combat buttne, boobne and backne in 10 simple steps!
1. Don’t Pop
Popping pimples can lead to hyperpigmentation and scarring. Also, it makes it more likely that you’ll lead more bacteria into your skin, causing more inflammation, making breakouts worse
2. Wash right after exercise or excessive sweating
“Wash right after exercise or excessive sweating. Your sweat can dry over your pores, trapping dirt and dust which can leave spots. Use a product with benzoyl peroxide as this ingredient is effective in treating both acne and folliculitis because of its bacteria-busting properties.” Try SBC Salicylic Body Wash, £29.50, Salicylic Body Wash | SBC Skincare | Vegan Friendly & Cruelty Free

7. Try loose fitting clothes
Not only will you feel cooler in flowing fabrics such as cotton, but form-fitting clothes can cause friction against your skin but also trap sweat and oil, making them more likely to block follicles.
8. Your holiday is a hot spot for spots
A wet swimsuit can be a breeding ground for spots. As soon as you’ve had your dip in the sea or pool, swap into a beach dress or loose shorts.
9. Adapt at your diet
Research has shown that foods high in fat, sugar, and dairy ingredients can raise the risk of adult acne. If you’re experiencing regular breakouts, try to avoid foods such as milk chocolate, chips, and fizzy drinks.
10. If at-home solutions, and lifestyle changes aren’t working
If at-home solutions, and lifestyle changes aren’t working, get an appointment with your GP. They may prescribe a medical topical treatment, or oral antibiotics.”
